Cunictune (10th century); Cunintone, Coninctune (11th century); Cunyngton, Conington (13th and 14th century) and Conington (Modern).

Conington is famous for two reasons; it was once the home of the Cotton family and the location of their 16th century castle. The castle itself was built from stone robbed from the old castle at Fotheringay when it was demolished. Fotheringay was the birth place of King Richard III and the place of execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. Today nothing of Conington Castle remains above ground and the site, near to the church, is a private residence.

USAF Glatton Station

Conington is also the location of the memorial to the personnel of 457th Bombardment Group who fought and to those who lost their lives in the Second World War. The former USAF base of Glatton Station 130 of the US Army Eight Air Force, 1st Air Division, 94th Combat Wing which was also known as RAF Glatton, lies just to the north of the village. The airfield today, now known as Peterborough Business Airfield, is home to Flying Club Conington.

Conington is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
